Dr Anna Ermakova headed to Glasgow last week to deliver an invited lecture titled “Industrial Applications of Additive Manufacturing” at the University of Strathclyde. The lecture reviewed the current industrial use of metal additive manufacturing (AM), positioning AM as a complementary manufacturing route alongside conventional processes. It provided an overview of the principal metal AM process families and highlighted validated applications in the aerospace, energy, and automotive sectors. The lecture then addressed two key barriers to wider industrial adoption: materials characterisation for safety-critical applications and the need for advanced computational design tools to fully realise performance benefits. The latter was illustrated through a case study on conductor shaping of electrical machine windings to reduce AC losses.
