PhD student - Nacho Blanco

PhD title: A novel manufacturing method for application of ultrathin sheet laminations for electrical machines.

Nacho’s PhD research aims to enhance the efficiency of electrical machines by utilising thinner electrical steel laminations. The project delves into the challenges of producing cost-effective laminations that optimise power-to-weight ratios for future generations of electrical machines. Specific challenges include minimising cutting damage, electrical losses, and changes in magnetic properties occurring during the blanking process.

Nacho earned a BEng and MSc in engineering from Mondragon University in 2004, followed by an MBA in Industrial Management from Sheffield Hallam University in 2005. Since joining the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in 2010, Nacho has been involved in project management. Through his PhD work, he also contributes to the AMRC’s team and developments in electrical machines.
