Dr Nick Simpson and Dr Anna Ermakova presented at this year's Coiltech Conference in Pordenone, Italy in September. Tehir presentation was titled: Next-generation Additively Manufactured Electrical Coils.

Abstract: The drive for Carbon Net Zero is increasing the demand for more powerful and efficient electrical machines in transport electrification. Metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) offers unmatched design flexibility for advanced electromagnetic coils. These coils feature innovative AC loss mitigation through spatially optimised conductor shapes, integrated thermal management such as liquid cooling channels, and new high-temperature insulation coatings. This presentation will showcase the latest advancements in AM for electrical machines, covering digital design techniques and the complex post-processing needed for low surface roughness and reliable electrical insulation.
