IEEE access paper focusing on a manufacturing-driven design methodology published

15 November 2022

A recent paper published in IEEE Access has highlighted what the FEMM Hub does best – bringing together both design and manufacturing expertise across three different institutes.

It is common practice for electrical machines to be designed with a focus predominantly on the electromagnetic performance of a machine followed by the mechanical design before it’s submitted for manufacture, often resulting in costly redesigns. This paper, led by Dr Jill Miscandlon of NMIS with input from teams at the University of Sheffield and the University of Edinburgh, proposes a methodology to fully integrate the mechanical design and manufacturing process routes into electrical machine design and illustrates its utility within the context of light-weighting of a permanent magnet rotor for an aerospace electrical machine.
