Hub Investigator wins 2021 IEEE Nikola Tesla Award

We are happy to announce that FEMM Hub Investigator Professor Zi-Qiang Zhu from the Electrical Machines and Drives Group in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Sheffield has won the 2021 IEEE Nikola Tesla Award. 

This was presented to him for his contributions to the design, modelling, control, and application of AC permanent magnet machines and drives. On receiving the Award Professor Zhu said,

“It is a great honour to receive the most prestigious IEEE award in our technical field. This is a recognition of not only my personal research achievement, but also the strength of electrical engineering research at Sheffield. 

“It confirms that the Electrical Machines and Drives Research Group is the global leader in research and development on permanent magnet machines and drives, with applications ranging from electric vehicles, more electric aircraft, fast train propulsion and domestic appliances to renewable energy.”

The IEEE Nikola Tesla Award was established in 1975 through an agreement between the IEEE Power Engineering Society and the IEEE Board of Directors. The award is named in honour of Nikola Tesla, an electrical engineer, a distinguished Yugoslav-American inventor, and a pioneer in many fields, who is most renowned for the development of the coil that bears his name and the AC induction motor.
